Dr. Michael Nelson is experienced in delivering gentle, uncompromised care. With years of experience in pain-free dentistry, Dr. Nelson has learned that administering an anesthetic very slowly reduces the sting a patient may otherwise feel. Overall, numbing a tooth does not cause pain, but there may be slight pressure. However, this can also depend on the patient.
Gentle, Pain-Free Dental Care
Dentistry shouldn’t be painful, even though many patients believe that it is. However, this is a common misconception. People often associate dental pain with the dental procedure itself when it actually treats and relieves oral pain. Dental decay or disease can wreak havoc on your health without the appropriate treatment, resulting in more pain and discomfort.
At the dental office of Michael J Nelson DDS, we use kindness and compassion to build rapport with our patients. We want you to know you can trust us and that you’re in very experienced and safe hands. Our St. Louis Park dental team is committed to clinical excellence and patient comfort, and we always strive to ensure you feel relaxed and at ease in our care.

Michael J Nelson DDS has always upheld––and continues to maintain––stringent sanitation and safety practices. Our dental office is a sanitary and safe environment where our patients can receive the dental care they need for a healthy smile.
Our Sanitation Practices
All of our common areas and treatment rooms are regularly and thoroughly disinfected. Between each patient, we disinfect the treatment rooms and sterilize all equipment and tools.
Our clinicians wear disposable surgical gowns and the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while treating patients. We have also upgraded our high-volume suction system, which significantly reduces aerosols and the spread of bacteria during specific procedures.
Your dentist may also use a barrier when needed to isolate the treatment area from other parts of the mouth. Immediately after use, we dispose of single-use instruments.
Additional Safety Measures
We invite patients to wear face coverings or masks for enhanced safety before and after their appointments. Additionally, we encourage social distancing to reduce close contact with other patients and guests.
Patients may also consider limiting the number of visitors who accompany them to their appointment unless necessary.
Our dental team respects and cares for our patients, and your safety and health are of the utmost importance to us. We will continue to do everything we can to ensure your dental visits remain safe and comfortable.
Crowns and Bridges
A typical crown appointment is scheduled for 90 minutes. However, we are not working in your mouth the whole time. Our patients will have a 20- 30 minute break in the middle of the procedure while we mill the crown on-site at Michael J Nelson DDS. The advantage of a longer appointment is that there is no temporary crown or second appointment. Patients love leaving with their permanent crown in place.
CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns
The dental office of Michael J Nelson DDS is proud to offer the advanced dental technology known as CEREC or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. The CEREC solution meets three critical areas in dentistry: restorative, orthodontics, and implantology. Using computer-aided design and computer-aided machining (CAD/CAM), we can design and fabricate your custom dental crowns in a single dental appointment.
Quick and Easy Custom Crowns
With CEREC, we can quickly and easily create dental restorations right here in our St. Louis Park dental office. Dr. Nelson uses CEREC to repair tooth damage from decay and injury by creating all-ceramic dental crowns. You no longer need to wait weeks for your final restoration because you’ll have a new and improved smile in less than two hours!

Dr. Michael Nelson customized each veneer to match your smile and complement your appearance seamlessly. Once we design the veneer and take impressions of your teeth, we send the veneers to a dental lab where a specialist creates the veneers.
When your final custom veneers come back from the lab, we will try them on at our dental office. During this appointment, you will get a chance to inspect the shade, shape, texture, and length of your veneers.
If you are not completely satisfied with some aspects of the veneers, we can send them back to the lab to make them perfect for you.
Veneers Are a Versatile Solution
Veneers are thin shells of material—usually porcelain—that conceal smile imperfections and improve the strength of your teeth. Your cosmetic dentist adheres the veneer to the front of the tooth, or teeth, using dental cement.
Veneers are solid, durable, and resistant to stains. However, it’s essential to take care of your teeth to ensure they remain functional and attractive. This includes brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist for routine exams and cleanings.
Damage or wear to the veneers can result in replacement or another type of treatment.
Veneers can make uneven, stained, gapped, or crooked teeth look perfectly straight and white. They can also improve the size and shape of your teeth and solidify cracked or fractured teeth.

Dr. Michael Nelson agrees with the American Dental Association that fluoride is very beneficial to people of all ages. Contrary to popular belief, adults and children can receive fluoride treatment and incorporate fluoride into their daily lives. However, excessive fluoride exposure can damage the enamel.
People commonly use fluoride in oral hygiene products, such as toothpaste and mouthwash. Before using any dental products, please make sure they have the ADA Seal of Approval or speak with your dentist.
Fluoride Protects Your Oral Health
Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that can strengthen enamel and prevent tooth decay. Many public drinking water sources contain fluoride, helping people of all ages protect their teeth.
Your dentist can apply a fluoride treatment to your teeth to prevent cavities. Fluoride adds strength to your teeth's matrix and acts to block tubules, which reduces sensitivity.
Dr. Nelson always highly recommends patients receive a fluoride treatment at each preventative dental appointment.
