Dental Crowns Are Versatile

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a natural tooth down to the gum line. Patients who have the following issues may benefit from a dental crown.

  • Tooth decay
  • Uneven bite
  • Discoloration
  • Treated tooth (e.g., root canal)
  • Broken tooth
  • Weak or brittle tooth

Dental crowns are versatile because they can restore dental issues or accompany a dental implant or bridge. Ultimately, a dental crown protects the underlying natural tooth from damage, decay, and wear.

Dental Bridges “Bridge” the Gap

A dental bridge fills in the gap left behind by missing teeth. A bridge can replace one or several missing consecutive teeth and uses a crown on each side of the gap to hold the bridge in place. A bridge restores a patient’s ability to eat, chew, and speak while completing their smile.

Custom-Made for Your Smile

With the advancements in dental materials, we can create restorations that look and feel just like natural teeth. We use all-ceramic and porcelain of the highest quality to ensure the utmost comfort, functionality, and aesthetics. Our goal with designing crowns and bridges is to replicate nature so we can perfectly restore a broken or fractured tooth.

The Dental Crown Process

A crown usually takes two dental visits: the first appointment includes an examination and tooth preparation, and the second appointment is for crown placement.

The First Visit

Your dentist will take digital x-rays of your tooth and the surrounding bone and check for tooth decay, risk of infection, and any injuries to the tooth’s pulp. He then shapes and prepares the tooth, so the crown fits perfectly and comfortably.

Next, our team takes digital impressions of your mouth and sends these details to a dental lab, where a specialist creates your final crown. Making the crown can take a few weeks, so we place a temporary crown until it’s ready.

The Second Visit

At the second appointment, we first check the final crown’s fit, shape, and shade. We then numb your tooth and use dental cement to secure the crown into place.

CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns

Michael J Nelson, DDS, is proud to offer CEREC same-day dental crowns using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM). These crowns are all-ceramic, and we create them right here at our St. Louis Park dental office.

The process is similar to a traditional crown. First, we remove decay and shape the tooth to receive the crown. We then use a digital scanner to take pictures of your mouth, and our software creates a 3-D model of the tooth.

We send this digital design to our in-office milling machine, where it carves the crown from a ceramic block. In less than 20 minutes, your new crown is ready to be cemented over the natural tooth.
